The department of
History was opened in
1981 along with the
establishment of the
college. The department
started to impart
Honours teaching from
1984.
There are 332 students
reading History either
as Pass or Honours or
Elective subject
including 44 Honours
students. Most of the
students are female and
they belong to adjoining
rural area.
The
department has
established a glorious
record of its own.
During 25 years of its
existence, one student
has secured the First
position and was awarded
Ghanashyam Das, memorial
Gold Medal in 2005 under
Sambalpur University.
The department has close
collaboration with the
P.G. department of
History of Sambalpur
University.
Apart
from lecture method of
teaching, the department
organizes study tours to
different historical
places in the state. The
students are also given
scope to visit the site
of excavations keeping
in view their syllabus
‘Heritage of Art and
Architecture’. In fact
these provide first hand
information to the
students.
The department has
its own Seminar Library
containing 42 number of
books and 728 no: of
books are available in
Central Library on this
subject.
The faculty members
of the department are
involved in research
activities. Mr. D.K.
Gour, who is a Senior
Lecturer, has obtained
Ph.D. Degree in 2004
from Sambalpur
University. Most of the
faculty members are the
members of Orissa and
Indian History Congress.
They regularly attend
the Congress and
different Conferences at
State and National
level. A few articles
have also been published
in the proceedings of
the Congress. The
Department has a close
association with the
various libraries all
over the country.
The department
organized a State level
U.G.C. Sponsored
Conference on “Freedom
Movement in Orissa:
Contribution of Bargarh
District” in February,
2005. Besides, the
department holds Seminar
at least once in a month
during the academic
session. It also invites
resource persons to
deliver talks on topics
of History. |
